Fresh Produce. Fresh Outlook.

I did not necessarily wake up on the right side of the bed today. The silly wiener dog that we call Lady was barking up a storm, I could not find a comfortable position in my bed (mostly because I am too tall for it), and I was a bit restless overall. After struggling to find sleep for hours and being completely unsuccessful, I threw in the towel at 9:46am.

The lack of sleep left me in a somewhat irritable mood, and I knew that something would have to be done in order for me to function properly throughout the day (it is a Saturday, afterall, and it should not be thwarted by low spirits).

I went immediately to my closet and pulled out this new thrift store find, a Fresh Produce dress from the 90's in a lovely yellow color with a bright sunflower on the chest. I paired it with a rich blue denim vest to add even more liveliness.

The mixture of vibrant hues instantly alleviated my foul mood, and my excitement about the outfit put me in a great place to start the day.

The fedora, of course, is meant to cover the messy and dirty hair due to a lack of a shower. Luckily it sort of completed the outfit.

Stay gold.

I'm obsessed with new alternative artist Santogold. Santi White, a.k.a. Santogold, released her debut self-titled album last month. I just heard her for the first time a couple nights ago and after listening to a few tracks from her album I'm hooked. I think she sounds like a mix between Tegan and Sara and Gwen Stefani. Many compare her sound to M.I.A. and the Pixies, whom she says have influenced her music because of their 80's pop sound. She explains, "I felt that a lot of pop music from the 80's had a depth to it, and I hope to bring back some more good pop songs."

Her sound is unique from that of other solo female artists right, mostly because her songs are not easily classified into just one genre. In one album she mixes upbeat pop songs with slower, almost angry tracks. On her album she works with a large number of established artists including Diplo, M.I.A. and Naeem Juwan of Spank Rock.

Check her out. My favorite tracks are "L.E.S. Aritistes" and "Pretty Green."
Gotta go get ready for work. Enjoy.

Rockin the Suburbs

Went out on the town with my parents tonight sporting this getup with the help of my two new favorite accessories, my poncho and my homemade feather headband (see post below).

So I'm pretty into this poncho which I picked up from Goodwill yesterday with Shameless. The way I wear it is kind of different than it's meant for, but I guess that's what I'm all about. I prefer to bunch it up around the collar like a scarf and let it hang down low. I paired it with a beat up tee, but I think any short-sleeved shirt would work (I tried it with a tank and I didn't think it looked as good). So I'd totally recommend picking up a cheap knitted poncho cause it puts a really interesting spin on what would normally be a fairly bland outfit. I chose a fairly neutral color to wear but I think a bright color could be even better.

Hope you all had a good night, I know I did (seeing Shia LaBeouf on the big screen always makes for a wonderful evening).

Let them eat cake.

So I was just looking at this blog that I really like called Art. Blogging. LA and I started reading about a past exhibit at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. The exhibit was called Consuming Passion: Fragonard's Allegories of Love, featuring the work of Jean-Honore Fragonard, a Rococo artist that I recently studied in an art history class and happen to love. The whimsical aspect of his paintings and the secretive sensuality that they seem to possess are what constantly attract me to his work. The above painting, The Swing, is probably my favorite of his. So, in short, I'm pretty mad that I missed this sweet exhibit due to the fact that I was still halfway across the country.

But what made me write this post, aside from my bitterness, was the film series that the museum displayed along with the Fragonard exhibit called the Lifted Hem: Seduction and Betrayal at the Court of Versailles. Now I'm a pretty big fan of all things France in the 1700's, especially the women of the time. The fact that they changed societal norms and, of course, fashion in the way that they did is pretty awesome. The series featured six films made from 1919 to 1970 about Marie Antoinette, Jeanne Du Barry, and other scandals of Versailles. And although I missed that series as well -curse you journalism school!- I thought of an alternative: my very own Versailles film series.

So I'm thinking on some swingin Saturday night I'm gonna round up the ladies for our own night of luxury and decadence a la Versailles. So let's grab some red velvet cake, our best pair of heels, and remind ourselves why girls rule....aside from the getting-your-head-chopped off thing. You in?

Hippie Hippie Shake

So I bought big flowers at Michael's a while ago to cut and wear as hair accessories (inspired by Carrie Bradshaw, of course) and was pleasantly suprised to find out shortly afterward that they were the topic of the most current issue of Lula Magazine. In the spread, a girl with tousled curls sports a variety of different flowers in her hair, and thus i got the idea to curl mine by rolling it with socks.

A wanted to pair my "do" with a fun, summery outfit, and I was excited when I remembered about my new high-wasted red shorts. I really love crop tops with high-wasted bottoms.

I'm not incredibly in love with my body (come on, I'm a girl), but hey, it's summer. Let's show 'em some skin.

Twelve by Twelve

A sister brand of Forever 21, Twelve by Twelve is a bit of a more chic label that offers expensive-looking, but affordable apparel. The brand, which includes tops, sweaters, bottoms, dresses, and accessories, ranges in price from $5 to about $70. Though the clothes are very trendy, many of them are pretty unique. I doubt that a dress purchased on this website would be seen on any other gal in your city or town.

From top:

Beaded tie tunic- $34
Sweetheart bubble dress- $39
Belted cocktail skirt- $24
Knit & woven combo dress- $32
Shoulder tie drop waist tunic- $36

As the Sex and the City movie opens in theaters, perhaps Twelve by Twelve could provide a sexy look for a night on the town with your best girlfriends (without exhausting your rent, food, or entertainment money).

new loves

Okay so if I ate a bowl of the Cinnabon Crunch every morning i could potentially develop diabetes, but just a little bit of this cereal mixed with a high fiber cereal is actually relatively healthy (and especially delicious) breakfast. It's made with whole grains, too!

Also, the White Bean & Basil Hummus is an delightfully tasty afternoon snack. I usually have hummus with pita bread, but I quite enjoy dipping carrots in this yummy dip. It makes for a more nutritious bite.

The cereal, I'm sure, can be found at any major grocery store. The hummus is from Trader Joe's.

Snack away, my friends.

Flower Power

I have to admit, I am quite the flower enthusiast. I love having fresh flowers in my room; it brightens my day to see them. They are just so happy-looking, aren't they? Floral prints evoke that same sense of merriment to me. I recently saw a spread in a magazine that displayed all sorts of cute ways to wear fake flowers in your hair (second picture from top), and it so reminded me of Carrie Bradshaw. She pulled off the huge-flower-corsage-worn-as-a-hat look like the fashion diva that she is.

The wonderful thing about flowers, though, is that they work anywhere: in your hair, on your shoe, on a print in your new summer dress, or as a detail on a brightly colored blouse. Floral details bring forth a whimsical aspect to fashion that is terribly exciting. As we embrace spring and prepare for summer, flowers are the perfect accessory to liven up an outfit.

Wide load

Just bought these jeans from urbanoutfitters.com. They are made by Cheap Monday who also make stellar colored jeans of which i have a couple pairs. The ones I have are actually boys because they go on sale more often than the girls do and fit me just as well. I don't really know if that's a good thing or a bad thing...

Anyways, I have been wanting a pair of wide-leg jeans for a while, but was a little apprehensive to buy any because I'm not sure how they'll look on my body. I was super excited to see these made by a company I love (and know my size for) at the awesome sale price of $24.99.

I'm anxious to get them and try them on with some different tops and accessories. I'm thinking tucked in shirts and chunky belts are probably what I'll wear with them and I may just have to invest in some new heels as well to elongate the look on my short frame. I'll keep you updated on their progress.

vagina monoblogs

We are not quite sure that this feeling is experienced by any other human being, however it seems to have manifested itself in both of us and, thus, we feel the need to document it, hoping to in some way provide relief for anyone else as crazy as us.

Fiction has ruined us.

Once upon a time, we were satisfied. There was a point in time in which we had no extravagant expectations of adventure or romance, but slow, continuous exposure to fantasy and the world of story-telling corroded our contentment.

The more and more we read books and watched films, the more our eyes were opened to situations we ourselves had never experienced. We became obsessed with ideas and schemes that we saw performed for us in movies, by actors whom we couldn't differentiate from real people like ourselves. Eventually, these stories drew us away from the reality of our own lives, making it hard, even somewhat hurtful, to accept the fact that we will never have a whirlwind romance on a glamourous ocean liner or be the ones to unlock an ancient hidden treasure.

We try to make these stories relevant to our own lives. We make a mistake we never quite learn from by attaching ourselves to plots and scenarios that break our hearts over and over again each time we realize that these fantasies will always remain just that: characters in a make-believe world that is not our own.

Perhaps you can relate.

You got it. I want it.

Last Wednesday my dad, my brother, and I saw the Kills at the El Rey, which proved to be an extremely entertaining show. The duo, who go by the pseudonyms Hotel and VV, just released their third full length album, Midnight Boom, which has boosted them into popularity much more than their previous two. Although I prefer their first album to the others, especially live,  the packed crowd wanted to hear their new stuff, particularly their songs "Sour Cherry" and "U.R.A. Fever". The two are a riot to watch live; VV paces back and forth on the stage, frequently tugging on her various scarves and necklaces in seeming nervousness, while Hotel is partial to raising his guitar up as a pretend gun and shooting both VV and the audience. Their is a sexual tension between the two, evident also when my family saw them at the same venue about three years ago, although they are not romantically involved (Hotel is actually reportedly engaged to the model Kate Moss). They often share a microphone, as shown in the picture above, getting within inches of the other's face and locking eyes as they sing. The show proved to be worth waiting nearly two hours for, especially when on my way out I brushed past Adrian Grenier, my celebrity crush. I can die happy.

If you haven't heard the band, give em a listen. I recommend their songs "Kissy Kissy" and "Cat Claw" which are a bit harsher than their new music. Enjoy.

heavy duty.

I have never been a dainty-shoe kind of lady. Though there have been times when I have sported a delicate little heel with a flouncy dress or romantic-style blouse, I usually opt for a much bolder, heavier shoe. I'm all about a powerful-looking heel, and there plenty of them out there this season.

The good thing about trends is that when something is really popular, it trickles down to the cheap stores like Forever 21. Heels like this are everywhere! Now I just have to find some money...
